Day 20 - How important you think education is

Well, seeing as how I work in education, I think it's pretty darn important. I like my house, my BBC America, and the occasional meal.

Other than that ... oy. Don't get me going. Let me see if I can sum up:

Education is extremely important. You need to know things like how to spell, how to write a clear sentence and a coherent paragraph. You need to know how to read critically, recognize bias, and think for yourself, even when everyone around you is saying the same things--that doesn't make them right. You need to know math. You need to know history beyond the past five years. You really need, in this word, to know where things are on a map and how to find them when they're tiny and sort of blend in. We so desperately need a basic grounding in science to survive in the world.

Education is more than the grades you make in school. Education is more than a degree, more than four years in college or a certain amount of time in grad school. Does everyone need to go to college? Probably not, and that's okay. But everyone needs to be educated, needs to be able to think, and needs to continue learning throughout his or her life. We live in a world that is getting smaller and smaller, and we need to engage in it regularly. And, seriously people, there are many amazing things in this world if you are smart enough and driven enough to find them.

Day 21 - One of your favorite shows

Really? Have you been reading this blog?

Nah, okay, I won't go there--since we're also talking about education, let's go with this one:

Say what you will, but dude's educated. :)

I just saw an ad on BBC America last night (though it may have been DVRed--I watched a bunch of Torchwood last night, too) for this--they're going to show it Christmas Day at 9pm. Yay!

Though, as I said to Scott, shouldn't he be the ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future?

... because that's what's tickling my fancy right now! (The end of the long Doctor Who meme.)

Day 30 – Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

So I've been watching Torchwood as it pops up on BBCAmerica; god forbid they should show it in order, but [livejournal.com profile] jkason gave me the run-down of the overall plots a while ago after he burned through it on Netflix, so I can fill in the blanks. (It's a bit like when I watched Farscape.)

Anyway, it's wildly uneven so far. And as Jason pointed out, Captain Jack from Doctor Who is not the same person as Jack on Torchwood, and this bothers me a bit since there is some overlap. But I love Ianto; I love the actor's body language, I love how he seems to be sort of helplessly in love with Jack but doesn't trust him at all ...

And I got to see the episode where Spike comes back (I'm sorry, I know they named the character, but he was really just Spike with a wristband and no fangs ... and I am perfectly okay with that!), and damn but I adore tormented, messed-up James Marsters. He's this utter evil bastard, and then he just shoots this one vulnerable look ... and I feel bad for him.

I really liked the episode with Tosh and the frozen soldier from 1918, but Scott didn't. Still, I thought it was a much more solid episode than the one where the weird dude is manipulating them with ghosts to get them to open the rift spoilers )

Honestly, the best one I've seen so far is Gwen's wedding. That one was a freaking riot, and worked so well, and how come "adult-oriented" (as opposed to how Doctor Who is more family-oriented) means depressing? I mean, sure, let's have all the sexy bits, but could we maybe have more fun? Adults have fun!

But maybe I just haven't seen the fun episodes yet.

Day 31 - What do you mean, they missed Day 19?!

All right, here. With thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jenifoto, who posted it first.

There's no Day 19! Five flipping "Whatever Tickles Your Fancy" days, and they forgot day 19!

Seriously, the Doctor would not be impressed. This is not the pinnacle of human potential, here. And since right now I'm killing time until the Zweeble falls asleep, I don't have a fill-in entry for Day 19. So ... I'll stick it on the end.

Anyway. Onward!

Day 21 – Your Doctor Who OTP

I admit, I had to Google OTP to figure out what the question was. :)

Somewhere around the time I was getting really exasperated with the unrequited Martha Jones crush, I had an epiphany, and I remember telling Scott that the Doctor's true love wasn't a companion, it was the TARDIS. And I am not the only one who thinks this, as Steven Moffatt said the same thing in one of the "Inside Doctor Who" segments on BBC America.

The TARDIS is the Doctor's constant. (In the Lost sense, and also not.) When he's alone, he has it. He and the companions talk to it. It's alive; it has a soul. It may have mercy, even. It also does whatever the heck it wants to, regardless of where he wants to go.

And, as Sarah Jane and Rose commented, he strokes bits of it periodically.

Day 22 – A Who-Related Fan-Site

Really can't do much here. I don't explore the internet like I used to; I blame the Zweeble and those pesky demands of diaper changing and, like, food. Curses! :)

Day 23 – A Who-Related YouTube Video

It is uneven, but when it's funny it's freaking funny:

(See? I told you I hadn't run out of videos.)

Day 07 – Your Favourite Piece of Music

What, just in general? Of course, my next thought is that, technically, I could put "Toxic" here, since they used that in Season 1. Or I could find John Barrowman doing "Being Alive" and say that counts.

But no, I shall give you two cool, Doctor Who-themed* music doohickeys that I think are cool:

#1, you may have seen before ...

#2, my husband showed me a couple of days ago

I've seen this group on YouTube before, doing the Doctor Who theme and some other sci-fi theme songs, and here we have the new Doctor helping them out with more than an introduction. Rock on, Matt Smith, have fun.

Day 08 – A Who-Related Photo That Makes You Happy

Go check out my user icon for this post. That is all.

...

Well, hang on, there's this, too, just for the heck of it**:

* Yes, yes, that pun was intentional.

** But Laura, you ask, what are you going to do on Day 26? I answer with merely a cackling evil laugh.

... well, since the last cover of this song I posted.

Yes, that's Sting. And Deborah Harry. And Bruce Springsteen. And Lady GaGa.

What do I love here? The fact that the person taping it is obviously only there to see GaGa? How uncomfortable Sting and Deborah Harry look (at least until Sting does his little dance move)? Could it be how Bruce is unabashedly rocking out to the quintessential Journey song (you imagine him in his car, belting this thing out as he drives home from the studio)?

Could it maybe be the sudden, random influx of men in their underwear, creating a ragged chorus line that Elton John then joins?

This is an avalanche of cheesetastic hilarity, ladies and gentlemen. All it needed was Steven Tyler with a scarf-dripping microphone stand and maybe a quick guest appearance by Liza Minnelli to make the world explode.

Wednesday night, PBS, Great Performances at 8:00 (check your local listings)--David Tennant and Patrick Stewart doing Hamlet, bay-bee.

In honor of that, I give you this bit of silliness:

I'll have to see if I can find a good David Tennant clip.
seldnei: (Default)
I found this through John Scalzi's blog, and ... just ... John Carr, you need to watch this. Now.

1. I want to wake up my husband right now to play him this.

2. I wanna buy it. Can I buy it? can I?

Gingerbread Update

Came out meh. I don't think they baked all the way through--not gooey, but not quite done--and they just don't taste as good as the store-bought dough did (of course, since everything tastes better with high fructose corn syrup!). I think for my next batch I will see if Alton Brown has a gingerbread recipe, because his sugar cookies came out really well.

Scott decorated a gingerbread man-monster with fangs, a missing leg/gangrenous stump, and a bloody red boot. I did a sugar cookie snowman in the style of Jackson Pollack. Zweeble did a star with spots, and made the colors balance out and everything. His was actually the nicest of our creative endeavors.

Other News

Ohh, I have cleaning to do, as usual. After a morning of errands--post office, library, playground, gas for the car--I need to steam clean the kitchen floor, scrub toilets, wrap presents ... and collapse, maybe?

It is warming up, though, so that's good.

Pure Silliness

For all you Captain Jack fans out there, John Barrowman singing ... the theme to Doctor Who! Because it makes me laugh.

seldnei: (Default)

In other Doctor news, the Zweeble watched his first non-David Tennant episode of Doctor Who today, and seemed wildly unimpressed with Christopher Eccleston. However, no meltdown ensued.
seldnei: (Default)
... it's been raining since we got up, the Zweeb and I are just damp, and there's a funny smell in the kitchen again. You know what we--and you--need? This:

seldnei: (Default)
Oh my god, cute cat feet!!!

Seriously, I just watched this and laughed the entire time. I have to show the Zweeble when he wakes up.

Okay, back to being cranky, cynical, and a dog person.

... okay, one more time. Then back to it.

To misquote Pulp Fiction:

There are only two kinds of people in the world, Gene Kelly people and Fred Astaire people. Now Gene Kelly people can like Fred Astaire and Fred Astaire people can like Gene Kelly, but nobody likes them both equally. Somewhere you have to make a choice.

I've always been a Gene Kelly girl.

There would, however, be issues if you asked me to choose between Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor.

(skip to about 2:35 unless you like to watch Gene Kelly dance with a hat over his eyes as much as I do.)
seldnei: (hamlet who)
I mean, it's not, like, a famous bit ... but dig it, the Doctor and Jean-Luc Picard, together at last ...

They're apparently going to show it on PBS in 2010. DVD is coming out in January, but not in Region 1 format (bastards!).

John Hughes

Aug. 7th, 2009 09:30 pm
seldnei: (Default)
Okay. So I saw and dug Breakfast Club in ... junior high? I think? I consider Weird Science a total guilty pleasure (though I think Robert Downey Jr. was wasted in that film, and would have made a really great whatever the Anthony Michael Hall chracter's name was). And what 80s high schooler could resist Ferris Bueller? I faked sick so much in high school, I'd be a hypocrite not to like it.

However, I still see Heathers as a more fundamental shaping of my teenage psyche. So I was all prepared to not post anything about John Hughes because, while I liked those movies, they weren't quite that ... momentous to me.

And then I remembered this:

Pretty in Pink, people. Probably not John Hughes's masterpiece, and we all know the ending is problematic whatever way it goes, and that dress at the end ... really?

But still. I am a sucker for the whole "cup her face and kiss her" thing, and it's all that movie's fault. And I am too old to be Andie now, so I want to be Iona. (Except without her yuppie boyfriend--I'll rewrite the part for Scott and keep half an ounce of cred.)

[livejournal.com profile] djmrswhite wrote an article about how he and his husband bonded over a line in Sixteen Candles (go read it, it's cool). Which got me thinking, because Scott and I could, I think, communicate entirely in movie lines and song lyrics (we're so GenX it's ridiculous). And I realized John Hughes wrote two lines that are a part of our repertoire:

"You missed my eye by an inch!"
"Half an inch."

and, yes, from The Breakfast Club:

"Smoke up Johnny!"

(I know, you're thinking, seriously, that's the line? But it has become more and more appropriate now that we're parents.)

I'm sure everyone has seen this, but just in case, because it made me grin like an idiot:
