So there's this whole complicated story regarding carry-ons and the baby seat and our stroller, which I won't go into, but the upshot is that we bought one of those Snugli carriers for our trip, and today the Zweeble and I tried it out**. It went very well (compared to yesterday, when he wanted nothing to do with it, but he was tired and getting hungry); I got him into it with very little trouble (one of the side lock things was really stiff, but I got it eventually). He was smiling as I checked us out in the mirror, and he seemed to really enjoy our little walk. Lately I can't take him down the street in the stroller before he's howling (we have cruddy streets), but in the carrier he was fine.*** Also, not nearly as hard on my back as the sling--the Snugli takes a lot more of his weight than the sling does, so I'm not leaning way far back to try and keep him stable. (So, yuppie and not hippie. Ah, well.)
The front piece, though, which is the head support for smaller babies and sleeping babies when they face the parents, and supposedly folds down when the baby faces front, kept riding up over his face. I had to keep holding it down. This is not quite the hands-free experience the box promised.
I got home, looked at the instructions, and ... they only sort of resemble the actual Snugli I have. Hm.
So I sat down with the Snugli and used my native brilliance and MA, and ... figure out that the little loopy things that are nowhere to be found in the instructions are actually meant to hold the head piece down. Go, me! (Of course, since the Zweeble will not be able to continue chewing on the piece as it rides up, he may not be quite as happy in the thing, now. It does have a "cell phone pocket" that I'm using as a binky pocket, so I'll have that much handy.)
My grandmother will be especially pleased, as she's the one who wanted me to get one.
**I figure Scott will be wearing it through the airports, but I want to know how it all goes together and get the Zweeble used to being in it, and by the time Scott gets home the little guy is way too tired to want to deal with it.
***woo-hoo, power walk with an 18+ pound ball of chaos as a weight! Actually, he wasn't that chaotic. But he was definitely weighty.
