So in an ongoing effort to watch less TV (this is an ongoing effort and only middlingly successful), this morning I turned on the radio in the kitchen, which is tuned to the local BOB station.**

OMD's "If You Leave" (you know, the big song from Pretty In Pink) came on, and I gradually felt myself morphing into being about 14 years old again.

So I'm making mashed potatoes for the Zweeble (yes, for breakfast) and wondering, This song? Seriously? This is the one that plays and I remember myself 20-odd years ago? (and as an aside, TWENTY-ODD?! Holy freaking cats and cows, people!!!!)

And I realized ... well, of course. I have fully embraced the cheesy music of my youth (well, most of it) and bought a ton of it off iTunes. It's lost its impact.*** But this one--sure, I liked it back then, but I didn't like it enough to track it down and buy it. Thus, impact remains.

Still, what do those lyrics mean?

**BOB is like Jack, where the claim is that they play anything. And they do play a wide variety of stuff, but not as wide as you'd think from the imaging.

***I noticed this loss of impact yesterday when "Oh Carolina" came on the iPod and I didn't immediately flash back to my semester in England. So it's kind of funny that today I came across a song that hadn't lost it.

I really have a bit of a love/hate thing going on with 80s music right now. It's mostly 'hate,' to be honest. There's been a huge kick over the past seven or eight years for "retro" stuff (with retro meaning "80s") with all the clubs and radio stations saturating you with 80s music. I don't know if they've been doing it down there or not, or if this is more of a Detroit thing. I think there may be about 10 songs from the 80s that I would ever want to hear again, and the rest can go away forever. :)

See, I don't club (where the hell would I club around here, anyway?), and I rarely listen to the radio anymore, so the 80s retro thing is probably passing me by if they are doing it here. :) BOB is pretty good in terms of variety--some 80s, some 60s (I heard Simon and Garfunkle the other day), 70s, 90s, recent ... well, really, recent crap, but whatever.

The other morning Scott was hunting a decent streaming station that wouldn't cut out on us, and we wound up listening to 80s Alternative:

"So it's all old stuff," he says.

"Um, remember where I grew up."

"Yeah, so probably all pretty new to you, then."

Oh, and all kids' toys play "Love Shack," so whatever nostalgic fondness I had for that song had died a fiery death.

Oh yeah.. I know the feeling about the 80s alternative. I spent most of the 90s getting caught up on all the music that happened in the 80s that we had no idea existed because it wasn't getting played on WINK.

And, the kids toys play "Love Shack?" Really? Has anyone at toy companies listened to the lyrics of that song?

Yeah, there's nothing like telling Scott about some cool song I heard online and having him respond with, "I used to listen to that in high school." Bastard and his 97X.

And as for "Love Shack," I know! The Zweeb has a guitar that plays "Love Shack," "All Star," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," and "Message In a Bottle." Really, I should just be grateful they didn't stick "Every Breath You Take" on there.
