Days 2 and 3: Favorite Classic and New Series Episodes
Day 04 – Your Favourite Doctor
If you have read my journal for any length of time, I think you probably know that Ten is my favorite. Nine was the Doctor I started with, and I was very dubious about this new guy coming in, but David Tennant won me over sometime between "Tooth and Claw" and "School Reunion" (bonus Giles!). I like the stream-of-conciousness gabbing, I like the coat and shoes, and I dig the hair.
But the things I love about the Doctor as a character are things that have translated between the three iterations I've seen: the sudden shift between lighthearted/eccentric to dark and ruthless, the total love for the weird, the chaotic, and for people and their potential. And those awesome, crazy, over-the-top "I am the Doctor and you better run now!" speeches*.
So, while Ten is my favorite, I do really just love the Doctor.
*Another reason I want to see some more classic Who is to see if those things are all new to the new series Doctor, or if they're part of the history of the character.
Day 05 – Your Favourite Companion
Oh, well--Donna Noble. Totally.
Look, I like Sarah Jane. I liked Rose Tyler. I even really loved Martha Jones (I still like her name the best). But Donna--well, at the beginning of "Runaway Bride" she annoyed me, and then by the end I was rooting for her. I think it's when she walks into the reception they're having without her, then everyone starts yelling at her so she starts crying--then looks over at the Doctor and winks. Awesome.
I didn't mind the semi-romantic thing Rose and the Doctor had going--I did like that it was weird and there but also undefined, aside from those references to how the Doctor would inevitably outlive Rose and so couldn't have a real romantic relationship with her--but the one-sided love thing Martha had bothered me a lot. It was too sudden, and it never felt real or organic to me, more like a plot point. I kept wondering why Martha had to be in love with the Doctor--there's not a damn thing she does in that series that has to be motivated by romantic love.
Plus, let's be honest here--both those girls were, like, 25 tops.
So then along comes Donna. Cranky, abrasive Donna, who isn't in love with the Doctor; she is a really good friend to him ("Turn around and ask her yourself." With that smile). In fact, in "The End of Time," he calls her his best friend. She's funny (seriously, the scene in "Unicorn and the Wasp" where she's eating and periodically asking, "So he killed him?"), she's weird, she's not 25, she's smarter than she knows, she's got a great temper (she's not threatening the Sybilline with what the Doctor will do to them, baby), and she thinks to speak to the Roman guy in Latin to see what happens. ("Me no-ee speak-ee Celt!")
And her eventual fate kills me. On all sorts of levels. It's such good drama, and it's awful. And it kind of breaks the Doctor, I think. I definitely think the things Ten went through (not just Donna, but all of it) are affecting the way Eleven deals with Amy and Rory. But that's another story.
Oh, and Amy and Rory? Tying for second place in this question. Have you noticed how long Amy's hands are?
