Day 18 - Your beliefs
Er. In general?
I believe ... that stupidity, as Frank Zappa told us, is a basic building block of the universe, like hydrogen. I believe that Hamlet is an awesome play. I believe that To Kill A Mockingbird is the great American novel, that comic books are literature, that your sins will find you out, that My Antonia is overrated, that Spider-Man does not need a reboot yet (unless you're talking about the musical, in which case I throw my hands in the air); that William Faulkner was a twisted dude, but pretty cool nonetheless, that I can probably live my entire life without reading Hemingway, Moby Dick or Invisible Man again, and that post-modernism is cool. I believe that people should be polite, kind, considerate, and take care of each other. I believe that common courtesy is a basic right, but that respect is earned. I believe that my husband and I could communicate for an entire day in movie quotes, song lyrics, lines from TV shows, and bits from books. I believe that the Zweeble's hair will turn brown before he's ten, though I'm willing to be wrong on that one. Like Neil Gaiman says, I can believe things that are true and things that are not true. I believe in Art and Music and Books and The Life of the Mind. I believe there might just be a monster in Loch Ness and such a thing as Bigfoot. I believe there is life on other planets, but I seriously doubt they've come to see us. Kevin Costner made me believe that there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter (and I'm okay with three-day-long kisses, though you need Chapstick if you're going to be doing that sort of thing), but I believe it's way more interesting if you don't believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe that the world is better when there are more creative people working in it. I believe in words.
