New season of Doctor Who starts tonight on Sci-Fi! The Sci-Fi channel sucks in so many ways (how many "Something: Stupid Tag Line" movies are there in the world, and why do we need more? Oh, wait, so my husband has something incredibly stupid to make fun of on Saturday nights), but then they show something really keen. Like the new Doctor Who. Battlestar Galactica is also pretty cool--I watched it for a while, then got really sick of it, then watched some more and got drawn in. But even when I thought it had gone completely lame and didn't watch it for a while, I had to admit it had a lot of ambition and looked amazing. Scott loves the space battles where the ships flip all over the place (I think of it as the "the enemy's gate is down" school of space battles, and who else can identify that reference?).
So, anyway ... new Doctor Who! Yay! So there's a marathon of last season on all day, yay again! The Zweeble shall continue his geek indoctrination.
Unfortunately, my movie-going has been sad of late. My babysitter is doing a lot of home remodeling, so I haven't had a chance to see the pirates, and now Harry Potter is coming up, book *and* movie ... I think I'm going to have to pre-order the book and black out all media for a week when *that* comes out. I can skip the movie, since I know what happens, anyway. :)
We did see The Fountain last week, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. It was beautiful to look at, and Hugh Jackman was in it, going from totally hairy Conquistador to totally bald sci-fi dude, and looking quite hot all the way through. I'm a little suspicious of the movie, though, since it's deep and I actually got what was going on ... that must mean it's no good. ;) We're supposed to get The Warriors today, and Scott seems to think I'll like it.
Ooooh, UPS just showed up ... with a *big* box! Oh, drat, he's heading up to the house across the street. Phooey. We keep getting surprise packages for the baby, so anytime the mail lady pauses for a long time or the UPS dude shows up, I get excited.
Speaking of the Zweeble, I have a bit of advice for all you non-parents who may have other friends to buy baby gifts for: babies do like mobiles (maybe not right away, but eventually), so they're good gifts. They're even good things to have more than one of--the parents can put one over the crib, another over the playpen, and another over the changing table (and is *that* a great place for a distraction!). But when you're doing your shopping, look for a mobile with batteries and a rotation time of more than five minutes, so Mom or Dad or whoever is babysitting can actually grab a sandwich, change a diaper, use the bathroom, or wash hands while the little tyke is enchanted with the whirligig above him, rather than having to keep re-winding the thing!
Also, if it is a winding mobile, don't hang it too high over the changing table for Mommy to wind it. Scott. :)

Date: 2007-07-06 07:55 pm (UTC)i love BSG. this upcoming season is it's last from what i heard. that pretty much sucks 'cause there's not much else on sci-fi any more that i like except the twilight zone. what sucks about that is they keep showing the same damn episodes all the time. i swear that they show the exact same shows in the same order for every marathon they have.
when you get the baby sitter back you have to, absolutely have to, go see Transformers!!!!!!! it's fantastic. i'm sure there are all sorts of inconsistancies, and not possibles except maybe on a quantum scale things, but you don't notice them 'cause the bots are so freaking cool and realistic looking. i read in wired that a fight scene with multiple bots in it took 38 hours to render each frame!!! yes, one frame took ILM (i think it was ILM) 38 hours to render. amazing.

Date: 2007-07-07 02:45 am (UTC)Is it just because of spoilers and whatnot that it being behind the BBC bothered you? It is season three of the new series--second season of David Tennant, but third since the relaunch.
With BSG, I think it's good to know it's the last season, just so they can wrap it up well and not just peter out or meander like crazy (hello, "Lost"!). Though for real fans of the show, having only--what, four?--seasons does kind of suck.
I keep hearing Transformers is worth it for the giant robot fights. And that the plot is kind of not there ... but it's a bit like Face/Off, I'd think--once you hoist your disbelief high enough to get past the (very absurd) basic premise of the movie, why let anything else bother you? :)

Date: 2007-07-07 03:47 pm (UTC)pretty much. i had already seen them so there wasn't much of a need to watch them again. and at least for a while bbc was showing season two when sci-fi was showing season one. i taped them las night. i'm glad that you mentioned it in your entry 'cause i'd have totally missed it. i don't get to watch my shows that often any more now that i'm at Lori's. she needs to watch some of her shows and tape (dvr) others. it ends up getting full and the only way to get through them is to watch them with her. i did get her into BSG though. i don't get to waste late friday nights and saturday afternoons watching bad sci-fi movies.
lost. i'm still trying to get caught up on the second half of season three. after i get a little more settled i just may have to get a second dvr so i can record my shows. right now i end up watching ngetting sucked in to her shows. i need to put an end to that and start reading more again.
i never saw Face/Off. come on, you don't believe giant robots could transform into any vehicle of their choosing? absurd? yeah, well the fight robot fight scenes are cool and there are a few funny moments so, yeah, you need to go see it.

Date: 2007-07-07 06:13 pm (UTC)Actually, "absurd" was aimed more at Face/Off than Transformers, now I think about it. Giant robots changing into vehicles is *way* more believable than Nicolas Cage and John Travolta switching faces.

Date: 2007-07-09 11:26 am (UTC)...they're scattered around and out of order.
i hate when they do stuff like that.
